"Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds." - Albert Einstein

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile - hoping it will eat him last." - Sir Winston Churchill

"Affirmative action is something the good don't need and the bad don't deserve" - A wise man

"The men who create power make an indispensable contribution to the Nation's greatness, but the men who question power make a contribution just as indispensable, especially when that questioning is disinterested, for they determine whether we use power or power uses us." - John F. Kennedy

"The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were." - John F. Kennedy

"I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually." - James A. Baldwin

"Dreams are true while they last, and do we not live in dreams?" - Alfred Lord Tennyson

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education alone will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race." - John Calvin Coolidge

"We will either find a way or make one." - Hannibal

"Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake." - Napoleon Bonaparte

"My kind of loyalty was loyalty to one's country, not to its institutions or its officeholders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to; institutions are extraneous, they are its mere clothing, and clothing can wear out, become ragged, cease to be comfortable, cease to protect the body from winter, disease, and death." - Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens): A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court

"Patriotism is to support your country all the time and your government when it deserves it" - Mark Twain

"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable man persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man." - George Bernard Shaw

"During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." - George Orwell

"When the people fear the government, you have tyranny. When the government fears the people, you have freedom." - Thomas Paine

"I sense a learning: that much dumber people than you end up in charge. Look at the way things are. I'm no fucken genius or anything, but these spazzos are in charge of my every twitch. What I'm starting to think is maybe only the dumb are safe in this world, the ones who roam with the herd, without thinking about every little thing. But see me? I have to think about every little fucken thing." - Vernon God Little, Act II

This makes it ten national debating titles in nine years, ladies and gentlemen.

Ten.

:))))))))))))))))))))))))))

I shall be updating Wikipedia for the next five minutes.

***

Oh and guess what, people?

It just struck me.

We're keeping the challenge trophy for Wira.

We already have the challenge trophies for Taylor's and HELP.

:)

Thus we now have the whole smorgasbord of Malaysian national debating title trophies. :)

Well, all except IIUM.

Whoa.

Crowning glory.

Kevin reflects:

"You guys may not know it, but you made the dreams of so many of us come true with your win. Thank you for sharing it with us. I love all of you so much."

-- me too, baby, me too.

Guys, I love you, and I am so proud of you. Hugs and kisses from America.

***

Stories, statistics and facts to come.

Calvin writes.

We're gonna need some media coverage this time around, baby.

Now, onto Obama.

So I'm going to write something about the DJ spirit. This is what I wrote for Nostalgia, and this is how I'm justifying it.

Picturemag 001

Retrospectively, I realise that what really set DJ apart from other schools was our passion.

And this passion is what has made DJ great: Debate! Drama! Cheerleading!

So I say to you: prioritise. Screw homework. Rebel. :) Be interesting: follow your heart; create your memories.

And you shall be telling this with a sigh, somewhere ages and ages hence: two roads diverged in a yellow wood -- you took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.

So Jian Wei (U Michigan '12, SMK USJ 12 '06, Malaysia representative to World Schools Debating Championship 2007) and I were having a little post-debate chat.
12:53amJian

If the tournament is now...I don't understand why the hell my school choose to forfeit it?

SPM isn't that near isn't it?

12:54amAndrew

I ALSO DONT UNDERSAND WHY U GUYS FORFEITED

12:54amJian

haish..............i really don't know

12:55amJian

but the syndrome of all academics and everything else take back seat

is getting worse

12:55amAndrew

YA LA

so ridic

so many teams forfetied (1, 2)

12:56amJian

for me their forfeit was not just a lost to debates in my school

but a lost to the whole notion of education as a whole

12:57amJian

i told them outright that i thought it was the stupiest decision they will come to regret later

12:58amAndrew

:(:(

walau.

jian wei

i think ure more of a djian than a usj12

12:59amJian

yeah

i am afraid so

12:59amAndrew

click on the links on my recent posts

some of them by mothers (2) and sisters

one was like

"fail exams also worth it if we get thru"

not part of the conversation, but i have to quote:

Earlier this year, they got eliminated at the State level. Not eliminated literally, but they were Selangor's first runner up. It's a long story to how they got reinstated to represent Selangor. The state champions, after approximately five months, decided (two weeks before the competition) that the competition was too close to their SPM examinations. At least it seemed that way, because that was when the DJ kids were informed. Consequently, these little kids decided to 'defer' their school finals, to focus on the Wira nationals.

What other schools did in months, they did in twelve days.

i think this is what sets dj apart from all the other schools in malasyia

1:00amJian

yes it is.....haish...these people still don't understand that it's not the damn cert that matters down the road

1:24amAndrew

i think spm is next week

or something

isthat near enough

1:24amJian

i guess it's a very subjective thing

they should have studied

in the end of the day

it all boils down to:

if there's a will there's a way

i don't believe that it has to be an either or situation when it comes to matters like this

but i guess we (my juniors and I) have a huge difference when it comes to priorities then

***

There you have it, ladies and gentlemen, the spirit of DJ.

This is why we have 10 debating titles.

This is why we have 2 cheerleading titles and 4 runners-up.

This is why Djians are damn fucking proud to be Djian.

Because we have our priorities right.

Four years of not reaching national is actually a long period for a good sch like DJ. Hope we won't have to wait so long again.

wira debaters are lucky to have commited coaches but it wasn't about luck only, im sure.
from what i read and heard, the debaters themselves worked very hard for their win.
luck can only bring you so far. it's the determination and passion that brings you there
